Air pollution killing 50,000 per year in UK – another cover up?

A cross group party of MP’s say air pollution is probably responsible for more deaths than passive smoking, RTA’s and obesity. But the Government has chosen to ignore the facts.

I do not doubt the figure of 50,000 deaths pa here in UK directly related to poor air quality and pollution. Here in London there are zones of the city which are already thought to be unsafe because the air quality is so poor. There is even talk of classifying them as no-go areas for pedestrians.

Well, I’m not in favour of that last idea – instead, let’s simply ban traffic in these zones for several hours per day. How about a total ban on all traffic (except buses) in the Westend from 6pm to midnight Friday and Saturday nights?

I only ask this because whenever I’ve been sat outside of a mild summer evening enjoying a coffee or a beer in Soho, some prat comes by honking his horn and snorting filthy black greasy smoke over everyone.

Like someone once said, if you really mean to control the traffic pollution in London then bang on a congrestion charge with real teeth – like £50 per day going on up to £100 per day for the infamous London Black Cab which belches filth all day long. Why are black cabs allowed to ply our streets beyond the age of 3 is beyond me. Their engines are filthy and their smoke even worse – they stink.
