Second Hand Smoke affects your pets

The life you save may be your pet!

There was always much Information about Second-hand smoke and people, but did you know there is substantial research showing secondhand smoke is harmful to animals too?

Think about it every time you light in your house with Fido on your lap, or when you spot her favorite park.

The American Lung Association of New Hampshire offers some stunning facts upon which you should consider your pet when you smoke around them.

DOGS

• Dogs who inhale secondhand smoke are three times more likely to develop lung or nasal cancer than dogs living in homes without smoke.
• Dogs can develop allergic reactions to secondhand smoke. Common symptoms of this allergic reaction are scratches, bites, and chew their skin. Owners often confuse this reaction by fleas or food allergies.
• Cigarette butts can also be deadly. Two cigarette butts, if eaten by a puppy, can cause death within a relatively short period of time.

BIRDS

• Birds may react badly to secondhand smoke and may develop eye problems, as well as other problems breathing such as coughing and wheezing.
• Birds resting on the hand of a smoker may experience contact dermatitis from nicotine remains on the smoker's hand. This may lead them to remove their feathers.

CATS

Diarrhea
Vomiting
cardiac abnormalities
breathing difficulties and respiratory paralysis
Feline lymphoma in cats
Lung cancer in the dog
nasal cancer in dogs

Prevention:
As in the case of children and others at home, do not smoke.
If you must smoke outside, do not expose others to your smoke
Do not let others smoke around your pets.
Clean ashtrays-Do not leave cigarette butts in pets to find them.
Dispose of nicotine gum and patches in containers that do can be accessed by pets.
